Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is characterized by either inflammation or loss of cartilage in the knee joint. It is most often caused by natural wear and tear of the knee joint over time. Symptoms can occur in episodes or consistently and include:
The Kellgren and Lawrence Grade (KLG) system is “a common method of classifying the severity of OA.” (Kellgren and Lawrence system for classification of osteoarthritis | Radiology Reference Article | Radiopaedia.org) The grade is determined by the degree of narrowing in the joint space and presence of osteophytes (also known as bone spurs, which are bony growths that form in your joints or in the spine). Participants for the ACTiVION-I investigational study must have KLG 2 or 3, often categorized as minimal to moderate grades of OA, respectively.
